Daughters of Late Journalist to Inaugurate
Two daughters of late journalist Dekendra Thapa will jointly inaugurate the Challenge to the Champion charity football match on Saturday, July 22, at the Dasrath Stadium, the organiser, Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) announced here today.
Thapa, a Dailekh-based journalist associated with Radio Nepal was brutally murdered by the Maoist rebels on Shrawan 27, 2061 BS after more than a month- long hostage taking. He was survived by his beloved, two daughters - Nutan, 10, and Nisha, 9 and a son – Nirajan Bikram Thapa, 6.
The earning of the charity match, to be played by two top clubs of Nepal – national champion Manang Marsyandi Club and runners-up Nabil Three Star Club will proceed to the Journalists’ Welfare Fund. The fund, established by Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), is for supporting the families of the journalists killed or displaced due to the conflict.
“Many journalists have been victims of the 10-year long conflict. It’s a heart-pinching fact that the families of those journalists who suffered while fulfilling their duties of informing people of the truth,” NSJF president Niranjan Rajbanshi said. It is noteworthy here that 18 journalists lost their lives while hundreds were forced displacement during the conflict.
